A Look at the Different Types of AC Current Switches and the Benefits of Each

AC current switches serve the valuable purpose in electrical systems of enabling current to be turned off and on or otherwise manipulated to achieve certain electrical functions. While there are many different types of AC current switches out there to choose from, most people do not know a lot about these switches or their benefits. Yet, electricians and electrical engineers use these switches to enable a lot of processes that benefit everyone, from business owners to consumers. Take a look at some of the most common types of AC current switches and the benefits of each. 

AC Split Core Current Sensors

AC split core current sensors are designed with a split core inside the housing that transforms or stops the current when it comes through the line. Split cores can be preferred over solid cores for specific applications because they give a wider distribution of the current that is moving through and how it is used. In other words, the current coming through a wired connection can be split and sent off into different wires, whereas this is not possible with a solid core current sensor. 

Solid Core AC Current Transformers

AC current transducers with a solid core have one primary opening for a wire to pass through them. This single solid core allows for the manipulation of either AC or DC currents, but the current cannot be split and routed off into different functions as it could be with split core AC switches. These electrical transforming AC switches can also be used with a metering device, which is beneficial if you are needing to monitor how much current is flowing through the switch at any given time. 

AC Split Core Current Transducers

These switches are capable of converting a regular AC current into a DC current, which can be really valuable for certain electrical operations. For example, the AC split core current transducer is useful if an electronic pump is in operation that must utilize both AC and DC currents. These switches are also referred to as solid core AC current transformers. Unlike sensors, transducers are capable of reducing or transforming the current.
